Exams and policies
There will be 5 quizzes given in Discussion Section, but only the top 4 scores will be counted (i.e., you can miss one with no penalty). There will be one mid-term and a final. There are no make-ups. If you miss the midterm, you can drop the course, or if you have a doctor’s (M.D. licensed to practice in Calif.) signed excuse describing a sudden illness, I will use your percentage on the quizzes and final to determine your final grade. The quizzes will constitute 20% of your grade, the midterm will be 30% and the final 50% of your grade. Historically, the curve includes more than 50% of the students with a grade of A or B. However, the lowest B will not be higher than 78%. So it is possible that everyone could earn an A or B. As I said in class, you HAVE to take the midterm, unless you have an excuse, BUT I will calculate your grade with and without the midterm and you’ll get the higher grade.
This is not an easy class. It will require that you understand basic immunology, the virology of HIV, the epidemiology of HIV, and some of the history of the epidemic. I encourage you to participate fully in the course. I don’t think the material is conceptually difficult, but there will be a lot of it.
Here’s the part I hate. Students are expected to do their own work, as outlined in the UCSD Policy on Academic Integrity. Cheating will not be tolerated, and I will fail any student caught engaging in academic dishonesty. All exams will be closed-book and closed-notes, so all personal materials must be stowed under your seat. This, of course, includes mobile devices. The exams will be multiple choice, so re-grading will only involve interpretations of the exam questions. Because both exams are required for satisfactory completion of this course, any student caught cheating on an exam will receive a failing grade for the course. He/she may also be suspended from UCSD. Please bring your campus ID to class on exam days.
